چکیده

Bracketology, the art of successfully picking all the winners in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) annual men’s Division I college basketball championship tournament, has become a favorite national activity. In spite of the challenges and uncertainty faced in this endeavor, patterns exist in how the seeds appear in each round, particularly the later rounds. This paper statistically analyzes tournaments from 1985 to 2010, finding that the distribution of seeds that win in the rounds beyond the Sweet Sixteen can be modeled as a truncated geometric random variable. This model allows one to consider any set of seeds in each tournament round and compute the probability that these seeds would win in that round; this methodology can evaluate the likelihood of each seed combination in each tournament round, based on past tournament history. Finally, each tournament from 1985 through 2010 is analyzed using this model to assess its likelihood and measure the probability of its occurrence. & 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Evaluating Regional Balance in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament using the Tournament Selection Ratio

The placement of teams, or players, into a tournament’s brackets can have a significant impact on who will emerge as the champion. At Wimbledon, 32 players are seeded among the 128 singles entrants in that particular tennis tournament. UEFA coefficients are used to select those European soccer clubs that will compete for the Champions League and Europa League titles in the following season. Tea...

Seeding in the Ncaa Men’s Basketball Tournament: When Is a Higher Seed Better?

A number of methods have been proposed for predicting game winners in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) annual men’s college basketball championship tournament. Since 1985, more than 70% of the teams in the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds of the tournament have been high-seeded teams (i.e., teams assigned seeds of one, two, or three); a method that can accurately compare two...

The Final Four Formula: A Binary Choice Logit Model to Predict the Semi-Finalists of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament

The NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament is one of the most popular sporting events in America. This paper dissects the tournament and attempts to accurately predict the four semi-finalists (“the final four”) using a binary choice logit model. The model does better than any current rating system at predicting these four teams. This paper also examines some common issues about predicting ...

An Economic Slam Dunk or March Madness? Assessing the Economic Impact of the NCAA Basketball Tournament

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament qualifies as a sports mega-event, and cities across the United States compete vigorously with one another to host what is, by most measures, the premier intercollegiate sporting event in the United States. The promise of substantial economic impact has convinced cities to “invest” substantial sums of money to meet the dem...

A Logistic Regression / Markov Chain Model For NCAA Basketball

Each year, more than $3 billion is wagered on the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament. Most of that money is wagered in pools where the object is to correctly predict winners of each game, with emphasis on the last four teams remaining (the Final Four). In this paper, we present a combined logistic regression/Markov chain (LRMC) model for predicting the outcome of NCAA tournament games ...
